Navigating Holiday Stress with Ease: Mindful Tips for a Regulated Season (Especially If You’re Moving)

By Lisa Padilla @ Ritual Realty

The holiday season is beautiful, full of connection, tradition, travel, and celebration but let’s be honest, it can also bring a heavy dose of pressure. Between packed schedules, family expectations, financial demands, and the emotional weight this time of year can hold, our nervous systems tend to run a little hotter than usual.

Add in the process of buying or selling a home, and it’s no surprise that people feel overwhelmed. At Ritual Realty, we see this every year: clients juggling home prep, showings, closings, travel schedules, and holiday commitments all at once. It’s a lot, and your body feels it.

But here’s the good news: with the right practices, this season can feel spacious, grounded, and even peaceful. As a realtor, breathwork facilitator, yoga teacher, and Reiki practitioner, I’ve learned that our homes and our bodies respond best when we prioritize nervous system regulation. When we create internal calm, everything becomes easier; negotiations, communication, timelines, even decision making.

Below are seasonal somatic and mindfulness tools to help you stay centered, supported, and grounded whether you’re moving, preparing your home for sale, or simply trying to navigate the holidays with more ease.

1. Create Micro Moments of Stillness Throughout Your Day

You don’t need an hour of meditation to reset your body. Small pauses throughout the day can shift your entire nervous system.

Try:

  • One minute of slow breathing before you check your email

  • A moment of stillness in your car before walking into a showing or family gathering

  • Hands on your heart or belly while taking three deep breaths

  • A simple affirmation: “I can slow down. I can choose calm. I am safe.”

Micro regulation is one of the most effective tools when life feels full.

2. A Simple Breathwork Technique to Lower Anxiety Fast

Here’s my go to breathwork practice for clients juggling deadlines, showings, or last minute escrow needs:

The 4-2-6 Breath

  • Inhale through your nose for 4

  • Hold for 2

  • Exhale slowly through your mouth for 6

Repeat this 5–8 times.

This technique signals safety to the body, releases tension from the chest, and immediately drops you into your parasympathetic (rest and digest) state. It’s perfect before a big decision, an inspection report, or walking into a negotiation.

3. Ground Yourself Through the Body (Somatic Reset)

Holiday stress pulls us into our heads. Moving pulls us into logistics. Both can disconnect us from the present moment.

Try a somatic grounding exercise:

  • Stand or sit with your feet firmly on the ground

  • Loosen your jaw, unclench your shoulders

  • Notice the weight of your body

  • Gently sway side to side or front to back

  • Take three slow breaths and imagine your energy moving downward

This resets your fight or flight system and brings you back into your body.

4. Keep a “Transition Ritual” When You’re Balancing Holiday Plans + Home Tasks

When you’re selling or preparing a home, you jump between personal life, work, family, and logistics constantly. Having a ritual, even a tiny one, helps your body shift gears with less stress.

Try:

  • Lighting a candle before you pack or declutter

  • Playing calming music during home prep

  • Stepping outside for 3 breaths before and after a showing

  • Setting a weekly intention (ex: “This week I honor progress, not perfection.”)

Rituals remind the body that you’re supported and in control.

5. Create Boundaries With Your Time and Energy

This season can feel like a vortex of “yes.”
But a regulated nervous system starts with self-honoring boundaries.

For example:

  • If you’re listing your home, choose clear showing windows to avoid burnout

  • If you’re traveling, communicate your capacity early

  • Protect your mornings before diving into moving tasks

  • Give yourself permission to say “not right now”

Boundaries are a form of self care and a genuine stress reducing tool.

6. Lean Into Support. You Don’t Need to Carry It All Alone

Whether it’s a realtor, a friend, a cleaner, a mover, or a family member, let people support you. If you’re selling your home this season, ask what you can delegate.

At Ritual Realty, we help our clients create a calm, organized plan that feels supportive rather than overwhelming. Selling your home doesn’t have to feel stressful, especially not during the holidays.

7. End Each Day With a Nervous System Cool Down

Think of it as a mini “closing ceremony” to complete the day.

Try:

  • A warm shower with slow breathing

  • Legs up the wall pose or child's pose

  • A three sentence gratitude practice

  • Placing a hand on your heart and saying: “I did enough today.”

This helps your body release stress instead of carrying it into tomorrow.
